The active compound in Viagra is the PDE5 inhibitor, Sildenafil. PDE5 inhibitors like Sildenafil inhibit the degrading action of the Phosphodiesterase Type 5 hormone in the body. Following this action, the medication relaxes the blood vessels in the muscle chambers of the body. This relaxation widens the openings of the blood vessels in the genitals making them capable enough for the entrance of the blood vessels. As the blood enters the blood vessels, they swell up, making the adjacent firm as well.  This causes an erection in the user that is firm enough for intercourse. However it should be noted that the medication will not work as effectively as the regular stimulated times if there is no stimulation for the user.

Uses

  • The medication is primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, by the mechanism that was just stated.
  • Viagra also helps in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, by the widening of the blood vessels and pulmonary arteries they lower the blood pressure.

  • Reddening
  • Abnormal or blurred vision
  • Sudden decrease or loss in hearing, etc.
  • In some rare cases the user may experience allergic reactions that might include rashes, seizures, etc.

In some rare cases, wherein the med user experiences side effects and allergic reactions, the medication should be stopped immediately and proper medical assistance should be given.

Precautions

  • Always inform your doctor about your allergies and prior medication to give the doctor a brief idea on your physiology and the prior medications you might be taking.
  • Never overdose or abuse the medication. Since it is an ED medication therefore the medication should only be used when required.
  • People with cardiac, renal and hepatic ailments should avoid the drug so that the ailment is not aggravated.
  • Never take the medication to alcohol or the blood pressure might drop to dangerously low levels. 
  • Viagra is a very helpful drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Proper precautions and care can help the user gain full benefits of the medication.
